I recently obtained, via an Open Public Records Act (OPRA) request, a listing of 3,255 cases that were pending before the New Jersey Office of Administrative Law (OAL) as of February 2, 2022. The list, in the form of an Excel file, is on-line here.

These cases are often challenges to decisions by New Jersey’s many administrative agencies. For example, the cases with “ABC” listed as “Docket Type” are most likely alcohol retailers appealing from a ruling by the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control. Or, an agency may have referred a contested case to the OAL. For example, the cases with “GRC” listed as “Docket Type” are probably cases that the Government Records Council referred to an Administrative Law Judge.

The most recent list I have that corresponds “Docket Type” to the state agency is on-line here.

I obtained a much more limited list and published it on TransparencyNJ on July 31, 2017. My article gave some tips on how journalists and citizens might find this list useful.
